Monday, May 4th, 2009

Ringworm is an infection caused by microscopic organisms called dermatophytes. Also called tinea corporis, ringworm is a fungal infection that may occur at anyone at any time. Studies say that more than 20 percent of the people develop ringworm. This is a high rate of infection proving that ringworm is a common problem. The proper climate for developing ringworm is the warm and humid climate. Also if anyone gets in contact with an infected person or animal the risk of developing ringworm is higher. Another cause might be a weak immune system.

The best ringworm treatment in the market is the topical anti-fungal treatment. You will find such cure in the form of ointment, lotion, cream, gel, powder and even spray. Topical medication is effective on both eliminating the source of the problem, which is the fungus, and minimizing the symptoms, especially the itching and redness.

To stop ringworm, medications must have the necessary components to kill fungi. As such, many of the antifungal medications prescribed for ringworm are topical or applied directly on the skin. Some of the most common include ketoconazole (Nizoral), clotrimazole (Mycelex), terbinafine (Lamisil) and miconazole (Monistat).

Ringworms generally thrives in the moistly environment such as when people wearing socks or caps for long period. This condition enables fungus to grow and spread rapidly and this cause ringworm on scalp, thighs, toes and feet. Ringworm is also inherited by pets, specifically dogs. Your pets normally get the disease from surroundings stuff or creatures such as rodent burrows, kennels or may be from some other animals that are already infected. There are around 35 ringworm species that can occur to dogs.

Natural remedies for healing ringworm are the same for children and adults, except you do want to be very sure not use pure tea tree oil with children. (Creams are always preferable.) Additionally, it’s a good idea to make sure children don’t share combs or bed linens, and that you wash you hands every time you help your child wash or groom.

Ringworm can also appear on the other parts of the body including feet, which may appear as red from patchy spots. This turns into expanding rashes which keep spreading on the area on which ring is developed. The severe case of ringworms leads to several patches on the skin surface which sometimes overlaps each other and results in the inflammation on the effected area.

Anti-fungal creams can be purchased for this infection, and are usually combined with a mild antiseptic and a mild steroid to reduce your itching. Keeping the infected area clean and well aired plays an important role in healing this infection. If your over the counter treatment fails, or the infection is widespread, you should see your doctor. He can prescribe you some oral medication such as fluconazole.

Ringworm creams such as Lamisil also offer an orally taken pill which is also very effective and eliminates the need to apply messy ringworm cream on your body. Remember to take the directed dosage only. Also, be aware of any symptoms that may show up when using this treatment. With any ringworm cream or treatment option, be sure you are not allergic to any of the substances in the medicine.

Once you cured the disease with the above recommended methods, be sure to keep a good hygiene and take baths at least once a day to prevent ringworm from appearing again.
